Bake My Way

If you could have your cake and eat it too, would you?

If I shared with you the benefits of every ingredient in my recipes, would you keep reading?

And, if I promise to share with you a delicious muffin mix recipe that will help to create a refreshingly balanced meal, would you bake my way?

In this post, I’m going to give you all my (not so) secret insights as to what you should look for in foods when you’re trying to be super healthy, but in a way that will still satisfy you and your family. Read on rockstar!

Healthy Sprouted Grains:

Healthy, sprouted grains are amazing for their dense nutrient profile, digestibility, and assimilation of nutrients. These are superheroes for our gut health, and great for folks who are sensitive to gluten (but not allergic) because they tend to find sprouted grains easier to digest. And if you can believe it, their nutrient and enzyme profiles increase even more after they’ve been cooked.

According to a study from the Journal of Science and Food Agriculture, sprouted grains are also said to contain elevated amounts of amino acids and fiber. These are building blocks of protein! Which leads me into my next topic…

Dairy Proteins

  • Eggs:
The best are organic, pasture-free, and grass-fed.
  • Mountain Butter:
If you’re using butter, I always try to sway to a local source.
  • Goat’s and Sheep’s Milk Yogurts:
I use a lot of goat’s and sheep’s dairy products because of how much easier they are to digest as opposed to cow’s milk.
  • Cow’s Milk Yogurt, Cottage Cheese, Cream Cheese:
These are usually last on my list of go-to dairy products. A lot of people aren’t necessarily lactose intolerant, but still have digestion issues related to cow’s dairy. So just be cautious – if it doesn’t bother you, there are some great all-natural brands to choose from.

Healthy Fats

  • Olive Oil:
Rich in antioxidants, protective against heart disease, and has strong anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Avocado Oil:
Has a very high smoke point by comparison to other cooking oils, so it won’t burn or smoke until it reaches 520 degrees F.
  • Coconut Oil:
Contains MCT oil, which has been shown to support weight and fat loss.
  • Ghee:
Ghee is free of lactose, strengthens your bones, promotes healthy weight loss, and tastes deliciously like butter. To learn more about ghee, check out this article by Shape.

Sweeteners

  • Monk Fruit Sweetener:
This sweetener is derived from monk fruit, which has anti-inflammatory benefits, may prevent cancer, and helps to keep blood sugar levels stable.
  • Coconut Palm Sugar:
Rich in iron, zinc, calcium, potassium, along with essential fatty acids like polyphenols and antioxidants.
  • Raw Honey:
Great source of antioxidants, helps digestive issues, and can even help soothe a sore throat.
  • Molasses:
Molasses has the lowest sugar content of any sugar cane product, and is rich in iron, calcium, magnesium, vitamin B6, and selenium.

Additional Healthy Ingredients

  • Nuts and Seeds:
These contain plant proteins, making them a great alternative to animal products, especially if you’re living a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle! Nuts are also high in arginine, vitamin E, B6, iron, calcium, potassium, zinc, and more.
  • Flaxseed:
Super-rich in Omega-3 essential fatty acids and fiber, and have even been found to reduce the risk of certain cancers, cardiocascular disease, and lung disease.
