With this blog, I want to introduce you to some of my favorite authors, resources, and superfoods that promote healthy, radiant, firm, glowing skin and good health. As well as some all-natural, vegan, cruelty-free, non-GMO skin and hair care products made with some of the same antioxidant-rich, healthy ingredients that promote healthy hygiene and beauty, with ethical sustainability. Tannis is an acclaimed author and internationally recognized as an expert on nutrition that naturally feeds your skin. Her book, Feed Your Skin, Starve Your Wrinkles tells us all about the connection between diet, health, and how to keep your skin youthful and beautiful. Her philosophy for providing nutrients to your skin is that you should always have a “rainbow on your plate.”

Bowden is one of the world’s foremost leaders on nutrition and bestselling author of the book, The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth, which is a complete guide to the healthiest foods for your body, and how to cook them. I read this book many times while getting my degree in Holistic Nutrition and Natural Pet Care. I referenced and cited much of the nutritional information from this book in the many, many articles and recipes I’ve written over the years. This book is a must-have in your library!

I believe the best defense in preventing damaged, aging-skin is having a healthy superfood-filled meal plan that includes a wide variety of the following minerals and nutrients:

  • Antioxidants
  • Vitamin A
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin E
  • Silica
  • Essential Fatty Acids
  • Omega-3
  • Green Tea
  • Spring Water

The benefits of these will help to naturally reduce inflammation in your skin, increase moisture and protect your skin from cell-damaging free-radicals and toxins in your internal and external environment. Remember, your body is a temple!

 

Skincare Superfoods

  • Mixed Berries
    These are rich in antioxidants and Vitamin C, which protects the skin from the oxidative stress of toxins, free radicals from pollution, and UV exposure. According to Foods That Heal, the nutrients found in berries, grapefruit, and cauliflower aid in the production of elastin and collagen, keeping skin firm.
  • Sweet Potatoes
    These unique potatoes are great for their amount of Beta-Carotene, which produces Vitamin A in our bodies. Carotenoids are one of the known antioxidants for your skin’s health, tone, firmness, as well as UV exposure protection.
  • Avocados
    A fruit rich in Vitamin A, C, and E. Woah! I love avocados for their monounsaturated fatty acids that promote hydration, lower your cholesterol levels, and reduce inflammation throughout the body. According to an article by Livestrong, you can even use avocados as a face mask applied directly to your skin to receive their anti-aging benefits.
  • Green Tea
    Green tea is packed with Polyphenols called “catechins,” which are dense in flavonoids and antioxidants, and help with disease fighting. Integrative Nutrition has a great resource on the benefits of green tea.
  • Salmon & Sea Bass
    Rich in essential fatty acids and Omega-3, making it perfect for supporting healthy skin cell turnover, retaining moisture and reducing skin inflammation.
  • Red Grapes & Red Wine
    Both of these contain a powerful antioxidant named Resveratrol that has been found to fight fine lines and wrinkles. So, drink your wine ladies!
  • 70% Pure Dark Chocolate
    Dark chocolate is rich in antioxidants and fights free radicals and inflammation that damages skin.

Sun Protection Superfoods

While the sun has recently gotten a bad rap for overexposure of ultraviolet rays, the way your skin is protected has a lot to do with the way we eat and drink too. The idea here is to encourage you to eat nutritious food in the summer, especially. The sun’s potential to damage your skin is elevated when coupled with your body’s loss of water, elevated temperature, and eating unhealthy foods. Summertime is a great opportunity to take advantage of fruits and veggies packed with antioxidants, which are known to reduce the harmful effects of the sun’s UV rays. Nourish your body with foods rich in Beta-Carotene, Selenium, and Vitamin C, such as:

  • Citrus fruits
  • Bountiful berries
  • Blush apricots
  • Sweet melons
  • Vine-ripened tomatoes
  • Peppers
  • Broccoli sprouts
  • Brazil nuts
  • Brown rice
  • Freshly-caught fish
